Legal asks

Ask for a rank you already hold

The first check is in your own hand.

Make the request specific

In our teaching profile, name an opponent and a rank. You need at least one card of that rank in your current hand. Suits do not determine which rank you can request. Completed books have already left the hand and are not a basis for asking again.

Read a small example

With 7♣,7♥,2♠,J♦ andK♣, there is more than one legal choice: sevens, twos, jacks or kings. You do not have to choose the rank with the largest count. Nothing in this snapshot reveals whether an opponent actually holds it.

Check the claim carefully

“Allowed to ask” is a rules question. “Likely to receive” depends on information the practice does not have. Our asking exercise accepts any held rank for the displayed hand, then explains all eligible ranks.

Keep the turn context

A held rank alone does not grant a turn. The actual player must be entitled to act. The exercise assumes it is your turn and checks the rank requirement only; it does not simulate opponents, turn ownership or hidden cards.
